I got all the demos to work! 
For completeness, it might be nice for the bin/ to be pre-populated in the vbasic repo, and for all pre-built binaries to be named with a .prg extension (unless there's a reason they shouldn't that I'm not thinking of). But I was able to build (with cc65), rename, and transfer the demos without difficulty.
